It has been quite awhile since my last blog post, my presence on social media sites has been rather quite for the past five or so weeks as well. The flu/sinus infection/energy draining sickness has run through the household and we are just now starting to feel close to the 90-95% mark. My wife, Charlyn got it first before Christmas, just as she started her vacation…isn’t that how it works. I was strutting around the house like a proud peacock because she was two weeks into it and I was still feeling great, “ahh, 50 years old and my immune system is still working like a champ,” I thought to myself. Just about the time I spoke that thought to myself, wham, I started feeling like crap; coughing, chills, fever, sore throat…as Peter Hurley would say when he got the right look from one of his portrait clients…”shebang!”
Went to the doctor after a week, got some medicine, it helped, but I was still feeling wiped out even before the end of the day. So, basically January has been a bust health wise, but I’m happy to report that both my wife and myself are back at it.
Now, there were times throughout the month of January I was feeling okay, and, photographically speaking I managed to secure a couple of projects and also managed to scour through some of my archived cd’s for photos not yet uploaded into my Lightroom library, I did find some gems!
The first project was that of being the unit stills photographer on a feature film being filmed on location in Stateline, NV and the Edgewood Resort in South Lake Tahoe. I happened across a Craigslist ad looking for interns and PA’s for this film project. I answered it with the caveat that I wanted to be the unit stills photographer and they bit. I’ll tell you right up front this project was a no-pay gig, the Director of the film, Kate Rhamey and the rest of her crew are recent grads of Loyola Marymount Film School in LA. This is Kate’s first feature film, having won awards for successful shorts along with some national TV commercials.
I looked upon it as a learning experience and a chance to get some great portraits of up and coming actors. I had a blast and got some fantastic shots. Though I would like to show some, I have to wait until the production company gives me the go ahead. Their plans are to have it finished by August in time to submit it to the Sundance Film Festival, they will give me credit in the film. The name of the film is ‘Three Steps Back to Awesome,” starring these young, talented actors: Brett Emanuel, Travis Lincoln Cox, Bee Hudgins, Samantha Bowling and Jesse Pepe. My other project was photographing the TEDx University of Nevada Event on Friday, January 24. The College of Business at UNR put this event on last year at the Joe Crowley Student Union theatre and it was a huge success. This year they reached out to me and asked if I would be interested, I said yes! TEDx is an independently sponsored event that features many different speakers in their fields of work. TED stands for technology, entertainment and design and their slogan is “Ideas worth sharing.” I will write more about this event in an upcoming post.
Lastly, I’ve had a chance to go through some of my many, many photo cd’s that I’ve archived over the years. I know that everything is not in my Lightroom library. There are photos that I remember taking that I can’t find yet and I’d like to see if I have any portfolio worthy selections, but alas, I cannot find the disc…yet. I know, I know…it is all a tad disorganized. However, the resounding resolution that my wife and I made for 2014 is this is the year we get our “poop in a group,” so to speak! And it is at this point in the story that I’d like to share an image with you.
This image comes from one of those archived cc’s, and one of the gems I mentioned earlier. Actually, this whole photo shoot was done at fellow Reno photographer, Jeff Ross’ studio portrait workshop he offered back in November 2011. I thought I had accidentally deleted the photo workshop from my cards, only to be pleasantly surprised when I came across the burned cd with the WHOLE photo shoot on it…yeah for me!
This shot is of one of the models, taken on that Saturday morning over two years ago. Thank you for visiting my blog. Here’s to the rest of 2014 being very healthy and productive!
